Brno,

the second largest city of the Czech Republic with almost 400,000 inhabitants, lies in the centre of Europe. Other major European cities are within 120 to 200 km from Brno: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. Brno International Airport is served by airlines with regular flights. Brno is a capital of Moravia and a starting point for tourists who wish to discover the beautiful nature and culture of the South Moravian region. The Moravian Karst protected area lies just north of Brno and vineyards with stylish wine cellars spread in the south. The city is surrounded by lovely mixed forests which offer numerous opportunities for tourism and cycling. Brno prides itself on important cultural monuments which testify to its rich history.
Brno today is a seat of universities and important bodies of justice. The exhibition grounds, with a tradition going back eighty years, have a huge economic and social importance for the city, with fifty international trade fairs and many exhibitions and congresses each year.
Brno organises cultural events, festivals (such as “Brno – City in the Centre of Europe” with the Ignis Brunensis firework show) as well as major racing competitions (Grand Prix motorcycle races).
Brno is known as one of the centres of history and culture in the Czech Republic. In addition to magnificent opera performances at the National Theatre and tours to Špilberk Castle, you can enjoy a number of remarkable sites and historic monuments.   • The 5,403 m long Masaryk Circuit is located between the Ostrovačice municipality and Brno-Žebětín municipal district. It was built in the years 1985 – 1987 to replace the original classical city circuit where races had taken place since the 1930s. The modern premises have a reputation for being among the safest circuits worldwide and, being located in a forest landscape, also among the most beautiful ones. Brno is well established in the schedule of motorcycle and car world championships. The annual Czech Republic Grand Prix (in August) is the most prominent event on the circuit.

  • The zoo sits on 65 hectares of land in Brno-Bystrc, near the Brno Lake. It houses animals from all continents except for Antarctica. Tigers and leopards, Canadian timber wolves, polar bears, kangaroos, meerkats and the rare Przewalski’s horses are among the most attractive species. New enclosures are now available: Tiger Rocks, Tropical Kingdom and Children’s Zoo. The zoo organises numerous events for children and adults, especially in summer.

Brno Lake

  • A popular recreation site and an ideal location for all kinds of water sports, the Brno Lake is lined with sports facilities, restaurants, pubs and stalls. The regular boat transport between Brno and Veverská Bítýška operates every year from May to September (www.dpmb.cz). The lake is accessible by public transport from the city centre.
